'Mum, I have to go to Moscow as I am fighting a bear': Makhmudov on Russia's grizzlies, God and Tyson Fury

Professional boxer Bakhodir Makhmudov has faced his fair share of challenges in life - and some of them have come in the form of ferocious Russian grizzly bears. In a wide-ranging interview, the 32-year-old Uzbekistan native opened up about his unconventional upbringing, his deep religious faith, and his plans to take on heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in the ring.

Makhmudov was born and raised in the remote Tian Shan mountains of Uzbekistan, where his family had a long history of wrestling with the region's fearsome grizzly bears. "I am a devout Muslim, and my belief in God has sustained me through all the challenges I've faced," he explains. "When I step into the ring, I know that Allah is with me. I fight for him, not for myself."

Seeking Redemption Against Tyson Fury

Makhmudov's unorthodox backstory and religious conviction have made him a fan favorite in the boxing world. However, he believes his true path to redemption lies in a showdown with reigning heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. "Tyson is a great champion, no doubt," Makhmudov acknowledges. "But I believe I have what it takes to beat him. We have a shared history of overcoming personal demons, and I think our clash in the ring would be an epic spiritual battle as much as a physical one." Makhmudov is currently ranked as the #4 heavyweight contender by the WBA, and he is confident that a victory over Fury would cement his legacy as one of the all-time greats.
